Homage to Witold Januszewski. “What the birch bark told me”

The Gallery Roi Doré presents the exhibition Homage to Witold Januszewski (1915 – 1981) “What the birch bark told me” – paintings and drawings. The exhibition is organized on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of the artist.

Witold Januszewski was born in 1915 in Grodno (today in Belarus). He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw before being called up for military service in 1939. After the defeat of Poland against Nazi Germany, Januszewski left the country and embarked on a long journey through Europe at war. Finally, at the end of 1947, he settled permanently in France where he remained until his death in 1981. He could never return to Poland.

Witold Januszewski has lived and worked on the fringes of artistic circles, both emigrants and French. He developed his own pictorial style, even if in the seemingly abstract canvases, we can find references to his many sources of inspiration as well as to his own past, as evidenced by the title of the work that served as a title of the exhibition “What the birch bark told me? ” The exhibition organized by the Gallery Roi Doré celebrates the centenary of the artist’s birth and presents a selection of works dating from the 1960s and 1970s. This is a rare opportunity offered to the Parisian public to be able to admire the art of this deeply original painter and designer. On this occasion, Éditions yot-art publishes an illustrated catalog dedicated to the work of Januszewski.

The exhibition was organized in partnership with the Embassy of the Republic from Poland to France, the Association Lez’arts interventions and the Polish Institute in Paris.
